Project Adarsh Seva Sansthan (ASES)

Campaign Story

About the project

The unregistered urban slums in Jamshedpur face a constant threat of eviction. The community primarily relies on work in brick kilns for their livelihood. Due to poor school infrastructure and the absence of transport facilities, many children drop out and end up joining the workforce. A lack of awareness around family planning leads to overpopulated households, further contributing to rising cases of early marriage, child labor, and elopement.

Making a difference

The project team has been consistently working to ensure children are enrolled in school and retained. Key activities include regularly tracking and identifying children involved in labor, those irregular in attendance, or who have dropped out of school. Efforts are also focused on improving school and Anganwadi Center (AWC) infrastructure by strengthening and sensitizing School Management Committees (SMCs) and engaging community stakeholders. Additionally, the formation of Children’s and Adolescent Collectives plays a vital role in raising awareness within the community about the issues of child labor and child marriage.

Where Minu reclaimed her dreams—and a cluster its children

Minu*, a 16-year-old girl studying in 10th grade from a village near Jamshedpur, went missing from her home. Alarmed by her sudden disappearance, her family reached out to CRY America’s project team for help. The team conducted multiple search efforts in collaboration with community members. Relief spread when Minu’s phone location was successfully tracked, and she was finally found at the boy’s house with whom she eloped.

With the help of CRY America’s Children’s Collective and Women’s Group, the project team facilitated Minu’s safe return home. As a leader of the Children’s Collective, Minu was reminded of her strengths and aspirations. The team emphasized the importance of education and educated her on the risks and long-term consequences of early marriage.

To ensure Minu was met with compassion rather than punishment, her parents were also counselled by the project team. They encouraged her family to support her emotionally and help her remain focused on her education. Additionally, the project team also visited the boy, sensitized him about the legal and social implications of early marriage, and encouraged him to continue his studies.

To ensure Minu’s safe and dignified return to school free from humiliation and stigma, the team worked closely with the School Management Committee (SMC) and Community-Based Organization (CBO) members. Together, they sensitized the teachers, students, and staff on the importance of support, inclusivity, and acceptance.

Today, with the collective efforts of CRY America’s team, the Children’s Collective, the Women’s Group, and other community stakeholders, the cluster proudly stands child marriage-free*.*
